π― Objective
To help people affected by Gout better understand their illness, and self-manage their condition. To improve medicines adherence, as people have been shown to hold beliefs which are at odds with ongoing medicines use for Gout.
π₯ Who is it suitable for?
New Zealanders, MΔori and Pasifika living with Gout, who have been prescribed Allopurinol.
β οΈ Any contra-indications?
No
π How it works
The Journey focuses on:
- Educating people that Gout is not a result of poor lifestyle, but a primarily genetic condition for which the patient is not to blame
- Creating positive, helpful beliefs relating to the use of medication (allopurinol) for the treatment of Gout
- To improve unhelpful behaviours relating to suboptimal medicines use, such as not taking treatment to test if they still have the condition, or stopping medication because they want to lead a normal life
π Outcomes
Significant change in beliefs relating to illness, and increased satisfaction in taking allopurinol.
π‘ Rationale
This Journey combines the work of Drs Emad, Dalbeth, Petrie, Weinman and Chalder with the work of Susan Reid from Health Literacy NZ who leads the Gout Aotearoa Action Group, and created the Change of Life Gout resource guide.
